Atlanta-born Willow Avalon has announced the release of a new single, “Hypothetically Speaking,” a duet with traditional-leaning singer Kaitlin Butts. The track’s accompanying music video are set to drop this Friday, May 15th, at 10 a.m. CT.

Avalon announced the song on Instagram, sharing “We had so much fun writing this one and coming up with all the dark and unexpected twists. I can’t wait for y’all to hear and watch the whole thing this friday!! Carl had to die!”

The announcement included the cryptic detail that a character named Carl “had to die,” suggesting the song may follow in the tradition of darkly comedic country narrative songs, a genre with notable precedents such as the Chicks’ “Goodbye Earl.” Avalon’s own Instagram page had previously teased the song with the caption “Where’s Carl?” alongside hashtags referencing the Chicks and Dolly Parton.

Butts, a Tulsa, Oklahoma native now based in Nashville, is currently riding high following a viral breakout with her song “You Ain’t Gotta Die (To Be Dead to Me)” from her 2024 album Roadrunner!

The song comes as Willow Avalon’s second high-profile collaboration in the last month, following her duet “Cardinal Sin” with Jason Isbell. Both tracks will be featured on her forthcoming third LP Pink Pocket Pistol.
