Earlier today, Apple Music released Apple Music Nashville Sessions: Toby Keith Covered, a collection of six cover songs honoring the late country music icon Toby Keith. Available exclusively in Spatial Audio on Apple Music, the project features reimagined versions of Keith’s hits by Megan Moroney, Riley Green, Parker McCollum, Ella Langley, Tucker Wetmore, and Ashley McBryde. The release coincides with the approach of Keith’s birthday on July 8.
The artists and songs involved include:
- Ella Langley – “Wish I Didn’t Know Now”
- Megan Moroney – “Who’s Your Daddy?”
- Riley Green – “Should’ve Been a Cowboy”
- Ashley McBryde – “A Little Less Talk and a Lot More Action”
- Parker McCollum – “Who’s That Man”
- Tucker Wetmore – “As Good As I Once Was”
Keith, who passed away in 2024 at age 62, was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame that year. Several artists in this project, including McBryde, Langley, and Green, also performed at a Toby Keith tribute concert aired on NBC in August 2024.
In comments to The Rolling Stone, all of the artists involved had lots to say about the impact Toby Keith made on their musical upbringings. Riley Green shared, “I think because growing up in Alabama, we didn’t have a lot of cowboys. We didn’t have horses; we didn’t have big, long pastures like they got out in Texas and Oklahoma and all that. For me, that lifestyle of being out on the open range was so foreign to me, but also just seemed cool.”
Megan Moroney remarked, ““‘Who’s Your Daddy’ has become my band and I’s pre-show hype song and it felt like the perfect one to choose to cover,” Moroney said. “I’m excited to be a part of this series honoring Toby Keith and I hope you love my version as much as we do!”
