This morning, Keith Urban announced Flow State, his 13th studio album, due June 12th. The 11-track project consists primarily of classic yacht rock covers, marking the first time Urban has made a full album of covers, along with one original song.
The album features collaborations with Michael McDonald, Little Big Town, and John Mayer, and was produced by Urban alongside Dann Huff and recorded at Urban’s The Sound studio in Nashville. Two tracks are already available: “We Go Back,” the original co-written and recorded with McDonald, and a cover of the Seals & Crofts classic “Summer Breeze.”
Urban first teased the project at the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville earlier this year, telling the crowd: “It’s a thematic record of yacht rock songs. You think I’m kidding? I’m not kidding.”
In a statement, Urban said the genre’s origins were rooted in escapism. “The origins of this kind of music was, in certain ways, a reaction and an antidote to the stresses of the times,” he said.
Flow State will be available digitally and on CD June 12th, with a vinyl release to follow July 10th. Pre-orders are open now, including a limited run of signed transparent blue vinyl and signed CDs through Urban’s webstore.
