This morning, Conner Smith has broken his silence following a fatal car accident in June that claimed the life of 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins in Nashville. In a deeply emotional statement released on July 11th, the 24-year-old singer expressed profound grief and reflected on the impact of the tragedy.
In his statement, Smith wrote, “Four weeks ago, I was involved in a tragic vehicle accident that resulted in the loss of a life. Not a day has gone by that I haven’t grieved, prayed, and mourned for Ms. Dobbins and her family. My heart is broken in a way I’ve never experienced, and I still struggle to fully process the weight of it all.” He urged fans and the public to keep the Dobbins family in their prayers, asking for “God’s peace to surround them each day.”
The accident, which took place at the intersection of 3rd Avenue North and Van Buren Street in downtown Nashville, was investigated by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD). Authorities determined that Smith failed to yield the right of way to Dobbins, a local resident, as she crossed the street. No signs of impairment were found, and yesterday (July 10th), Smith was issued a misdemeanor citation for failure to yield resulting in a fatality, classified as a traffic violation rather than a criminal offense.
Smith’s attorney previously confirmed the singer’s cooperation with the ongoing investigation, stating, “Conner is incredibly grateful to the MNPD for their time and efforts to carefully investigate this tragic accident and has continued to cooperate at all times.” Robinson also noted Smith’s commitment to honoring Dobbins’ memory by supporting efforts to improve pedestrian safety in Nashville, where new signage and visibility improvements have been implemented at the crosswalk since the incident.
In his statement, Smith shared that he chose to step away from performing in the weeks following the accident, canceling scheduled appearances at the Military Appreciation Concert in Akron, Ohio, on June 20, and the Buckeye Country Superfest on June 21. “Out of respect for everyone involved and to give space for grieving, I made the decision to step away from shows these past few weeks,” he wrote. “I have always found that making music and playing shows is a place of healing for me – but for this moment, it was important for me to take time away.”
The Tennessee native, who’s always been known for his faith in God, cited Psalm 91 and expressing gratitude for spiritual support during this challenging time. “I’m thankful to serve a God who is near to the brokenhearted, and I have leaned on Him every step of the way,” he wrote. “Through tragedy, I have learned that God is more faithful than I could have ever known before.”
