Overnight sensation Oliver Anthony’s ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ has reached the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100, being the second politically-charged country anthem to reach the #1 slot on Billboard in the last month, following “Try That in a Small Town” by Jason Aldean.
The track has taken the country by storm since its release on August 11th. While viewed by some as controversial, the Virginia native sings about his complaints about the country and the injustices against the rural, blue collar class and it is resonating with people all over the country. Prior to its release, the song was posted on the radiowv on YouTube where it gained some quick traction.
After one week, ‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ racked up an astonishing 11.2 million streams and those numbers only continue to grow. At this rate, it’s a fair guess that Oliver Anthony’s breakout song may hang onto the #1 spot for a couple of days. The sudden stardom for Anthony may have come out of left field, but right now, it feels bigger than just one song.
