After a lengthy tease yesterday, Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds have officially announced their album Mutiny After Midnight, due out on March 13th. The release will be available exclusively on vinyl, CD, and cassette.
“This is a new and very different Atlantic Records than my last go-around,” Blue Skies shared in a statement, noting his excitement to reunite with friend and collaborator Ian Cripps. “I wrote words to what is happening in the world and my life in real time, and played with a group of musicians I deeply love and respect. Together, we made an album that is very fun and will hopefully offer some relief from darkness in the world.”
Produced by Blue Skies and recorded at Easy Eye Sound Studios, Mutiny After Midnight was crafted with a spontaneous, groove-forward approach. Songs were written on the spot, with the band aiming for what Blue Skies calls a simple mission: “to make a dance record.”
The opening track, “Make America Fuk Again,” sets the tone with raw, unfiltered lyricism and personal reflection, blending social commentary with the artist’s trademark irreverence.
Though Johnny Blue Skies operates as an alter ego of Sturgill Simpson, the project has evolved into a fully realized band vision with the Dark Clouds, distinct from his eclectic debut under the name Passage Du Desir.
Mutiny After Midnight will be out everywhere on March 13th.
