Cody Johnson has earned the top spot on Billboard’s Country Airplay singles chart with his song “The Painter.” The lead single from his Leather album is his second song to reach the top of the chart.
The neo-traditional pioneer reached #8 in June 2023 with “Human” and secured his first #1 with “Til You Can’t” in March 2022. Before these three top-10 tracks, he peaked at the #11 spot in June 2019 with “On My Way To You” and “With You I Am” flustering out around the #40 mark as his first attempt at major radio play.
The song was written by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins, and Ryan Larkins and by Trent Willmon, who also produced the rest of Cody’s Leather album.

Cody Johnson has been at the top of Texas radio charts for years as an independent act but only started gaining mainstream success after signing a publishing deal with Warner Music. His first major-label release was Ain’t Nothin’ To It in 2019. This past week at the Country Radio Seminar, the Texas troubadour announced that a deluxe version of Leather will be available later this year.
