Drown ‘Em – Corey Kent Written By Cam Greene
Corey Kent’s writing style has evolved a lot over the past few years. The Oklahoma native’s unique ability to give you a slice-of-life in every song he sings. “Drown ‘Em” is a tried-and-true country narrative about drinking away one’s heartbreak. However, the twist lies in the way the narrator is fighting the memories of her head-on; rather than just drinking to forget he loves this girl, he wants to lay their shared memories to rest. It’s not the most creative thing ever, but “Drown ‘Em” has enough substance to hold up with decent replay value. Kent’s delivery is pretty well-rounded and has improved greatly over the past couple of albums he’s released, especially in this stripped-back format.
How To Save a Life – Wyatt Flores Written By Creed Miller
Wyatt Flores gave fans a late Christmas present with his cover of The Fray’s “How to Save a Life.” Making this song his own, he took an incredibly emotional song and somehow managed to make it that much deeper. With a focus on soft guitar, the fiddle, and gentle piano, the production takes a simpler route, allowing Wyatt’s voice to convey profound pain. One of the many highlights of the tune is the final chorus. Wyatt is joined by background singers who come together to create a warm, communal atmosphere that should hit home with listeners the world over. The mark of an exceptional cover song, Wyatt Flores makes you feel like you’re listening to this heartbroken song for the first time all over again; no matter what he’s singing, he doesn’t shy away from being vulnerable, and his fans love him for it.
