A proverbial victory lap after the success of his single “Standing Room Only,” Tim McGraw is back again with his first-ever EP, boasting six new tracks co-produced by McGraw and Byron Gallimore. the EP has some standout tracks that drive the continuation of the optimistic themes of Standing Room Only, released in August.
“Hurt People” delves into the cycle of hurt and healing, conveying the message that healed individuals can positively impact others. Its vulnerable tone and compassionate message draw parallels to the emotional depth and soft production of Tim’s hit “Humble and Kind” from 2014. The song has a vulnerable coming-together feel that takes treating others with respect to a more compassionate level.
“20 for 30” feels like it was written for McGraw, as he sings about feeling like he has been 20 years old for 30 years. The track highlights significant moments of Tim’s past and being an artist on the road as seen through his and wife Faith Hill’s perspective, name-checking her as the “girl from Mississippi.” The song is symbolic of their unbreakable bond of love through life’s ups and downs, complete with that classic McGraw-heartwarming feel.
The EP’s title track, “Poet’s Resumé,” tells the life story of a working-class man juggling different jobs, searching for love, and being heartbroken, all of which make up chronological pieces of one’s life-long resumé. The track has its melancholy sounds as the “wasted lines” in a resumé aren’t about one’s employment, but rather the missing pieces of love and stability. Based on the songs chosen from his past records, a fictional storytelling piece is expected from McGraw.
While the EP maintains thematic continuity with the preceding album, it’s noted that some tracks might not individually stand out for radio releases. There’s a contemplation about whether this EP signifies the end of the “Standing Room Only” era or serves to complement and support it. While “Poet’s Resumé” is a commendable project, it’s suggested that a few of these tracks could have been integrated into a deluxe edition of the album.
McGraw’s dedication to his fans through this release is evident, offering a collection that aligns with his signature style and storytelling prowess, albeit not necessarily breaking new ground in terms of individual radio-friendly hits.
