Big Machine Records announced today that on May 31st, some of country music’s biggest names are coming together for an all-star tribute to rock legend Tom Petty. The record features regular Nashville hitmakers such as Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and Thomas Rhett, as well as industry legends like Dolly Parton and George Strait.
Petty’s songwriting prowess and iconic whine propelled hits like “Breakdown” and “American Girl” to the top of the charts, solidifying his status as a rock star. However, beyond rock and roll, Petty’s connection to country music was evident in his storytelling and occasionally twangy sensibilities that always struck a chord in the American Heartland.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Petty continued to leave an indelible mark on music history with anthems like “Refugee” and “Free Fallin’.” His solo ventures, including albums like “Full Moon Fever” and “Wildflowers,” further showcased his versatility and depth as an artist, leaning into his more acoustic, singer-songwriter influences.
Tom Petty’s unexpected passing in 2017 at the age of 66 left a void in the music world, but his legacy lives on; “Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty” will be released on May 31st. Dierks Bentley’s rendition of “American Girl” is available now.
