Fresh on the heels of his latest LP Gravel and Gold, Dierks Bentley released a new cover of Tom Petty’s classic rock gem “American Girl” today. Bentley’s interpretation injects the iconic track with a bluegrass-tinged charm, offering a fresh perspective on Petty’s timeless anthem. The track will be serviced to country radio on Monday (February 26th).
Reflecting on the song’s significance, Bentley acknowledges Petty’s southern roots and the ubiquitous presence of “American Girl” in Nashville’s musical landscape. “Petty’s southern roots shined through across his songwriting and storytelling,” Bentley notes. “You can’t go into a bar in Nashville without hearing this song.”
Teaming up with producer Jon Randall, Bentley assembles a talented ensemble of musicians to bring his vision to life. Banjo-driven arrangements, swirling fiddles, and mandolin flourishes infuse the track with energy and authenticity.
Contributions from A-list session players such as Chad Cromwell, Craig Young, and Rob McNelley, along with acclaimed musicians Noam Pikelny, Andy Leftwich, and Chris Eldridge, round out the ensemble. Bentley’s vocals take center stage, capturing the essence of Petty’s narrative with a blend of empathy and determination.
As Bentley’s rendition of “American Girl” gains traction at country radio, anticipation mounts for the forthcoming tribute album, “Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty” to be released by Big Machine Records in partnership with the Tom Petty Estate. The album brings together the top Country and Americana artists to create a tribute to Petty’s musical legacy.
